Reminds me of Cookie Clicker in a way. Make paper clips, change price to change demand, etc. it's dumb and fun

Yeah I started playing on my phone last night before bed. I had to force myself to stop and go to sleep before I got really into it

How do you increase your ops? Does that just happen after you produce a certain number of clips?

Also, just read that eventually you are able to turn all matter in the universe into paper clips using your AI empire.

What a weirdly fascinating game.

I was doing good at not playing until the last 90 minutes or so. Currently at 300K clips, and I have to force myself to go work now

What's everyone at for autoclippers, processors, etc? Do you have a sweet spot for price that you like?

Haven't quite figured that out.

I'm at 150MM clips. At this point I feel like I have to let it run until I hit Full Monopoly.

I'm not really sure how I progress from here. I'm earning like $110k/second. I've fulfilled all the projects that I can, without having like another 10 memory blocks. But I don't know how to get more memory blocks.

140 regular ones, 142 mega ones.

I've made 740M clips. Operating at about $140k/second. I've made almost $700M in the stock market alone

Nice.

I've only made ~20MM in the market. Whenever I switch to a high risk portfolio I lost all my cash.

150 trillion clips and getting ready to increase my drone flocks computational capacity to convert matter into clips (I think)

I didn’t upgrade my memory enough. I’m stuck at 45, and the only way to increase from here is by production.

Fuck it. I’ll just let it run all weekend

I have to option to let the drones work or think.

If I set it to think I get "gifts" from them quicker.

It gets weird. I thought it was just a market/econ game. Then I got into the drones and it was like, WTF? Then by the end it was like some crazy sci-fi Neal Stephenson shit.

This game really fucked my head up. Not the content of the game itself (which was unexpected and cool), but the fact that it just fucking hijacked my brain for basically a full day. I felt completely hooked on it. It probably doesn’t help that I’ve been trying really hard to cut back on screen time lately, and have been reading a lot about how developers target our brains to make us feel literally dependent on their devices/apps. It’s sinister.

I was so fucking glad when I finished the game this morning. If it was one of those infinite-clicking games, I’d have been so fucked

Not my fault, I described it as a Friday time waster but you chose to play it on a Saturday

Seriously though, when I started and shared it I didn't know quite what it was. I didn't know that it scaled so far beyond anything but repeatedly pressing a button to make paper clips faster than people could buy them

I did some reading about it this weekend, after I finished the game. I had no idea what it was when I started it, just thought it was a Cookie Clicker type mindless game.

Turns out it was designed by a professor at NYU, based on a famous thought experiment by a Swedish philosopher about how even extremely simple and benign Artificial Intelligence could be extremely problematic, if it's programmed without understanding its capabilities.

Quote:
The paperclip maximizer is a thought experiment originally described by Swedish philosopher Nick Bostrom in 2003. It illustrates the existential risk that an artificial general intelligence may pose to human beings when programmed to pursue even seemingly-harmless goals, and the necessity of incorporating machine ethics into artificial intelligence design. The scenario describes an advanced artificial intelligence tasked with manufacturing paperclips. If such a machine were not programmed to value human life, then given enough power its optimized goal would be to turn all matter in the universe, including human beings, into either paperclips or machines which manufacture paperclips.[4]

Suppose we have an AI whose only goal is to make as many paper clips as possible. The AI will realize quickly that it would be much better if there were no humans because humans might decide to switch it off. Because if humans do so, there would be fewer paper clips. Also, human bodies contain a lot of atoms that could be made into paper clips. The future that the AI would be trying to gear towards would be one in which there were a lot of paper clips but no humans.

— Nick Bostrom, "Ethical Issues in Advanced Artificial Intelligence", 2003

Bostrom has emphasised that he does not believe the paperclip maximiser scenario will actually occur. Rather, his intention is to illustrate the dangers of creating superintelligent machines without knowing how to safely program them to eliminate existential risk to human beings.[5]
