He looks like a cat we took in that was roaming the everglades. And one that certainly looks like he's ready to gtfo of there.

I don’t envy your job because those cuties “not making it” would destroy me.
You are a special person to handle that.
Sweet pics.

that part isn't as difficult as you'd think...if we're euthanizing an animal it's because they are suffering and it's simply their time...as sad as it is the alternative is rarely more optimal. if an inpatient arrests amd dies on our crash table it means they were surrounded by a team of dedicated professionals who did their best to save a life. honestly the stuff that happens to a patient in hospital is often not nearly as sad as the stuff that happens before they get here and after they leave.

and the patients that die in hospital aren't the saddest - the worst are the ones where the owner is unwilling (or financially unable) to hospitalize/treat the animal and they insist on discharging the pet ~against medical advice~ so they can die in agony at home. many people cause their loved pets lots of unnecessary pain and suffering simply because they are unable to make the decision to euthanize and it's heartbreaking. and DOAs where the owner brings in a non responsive pet that has already passed but the owner still thinks they're alive - those are brutal. the little old lady who's husband died a few months ago and their dog of 15+ years is declining...harsh.

we also get a lot of shitty owners who crop their pitbull's ears, horrible backyard breeders, and people who generally treat their pets like a posession instead of a living breathing thing. truth be told it's not the animals that make me sad - it's their owners.

BTW: i regret to inform that the duck didn't make it either :(

we only admit dogs and cats, but if an animal control officer or good samaritan brings in an injured/suffering animal our docs will euthanize it. we can also euthanize any small household pet (hamster, small bird, etc), we just don't hospitalize/treat them.

I was thinking earlier today. In this is day & age is it harder to keep up the Santa charade than it was years ago?

This guy's trouble.

this is actually a she
her name is Marie (her bro Donnie is in the back of the cage recovering from a LPL surgery)
she's being fostered by one of our techs and will most likely be in her new home within 48-72 hours
i spent about an hour today (in 5 minute increments) in our cat ward playing with her
she loves me and we should be together forever but it's just not meant to be
