Well, shit.
We are headed to northern Wisconsin to surprise my grandmother on her 83rd birthday in January. Both Mr. Kay and I are veteran WI winter survivors, and we keep a box of winter gear in the closet. I pulled it down to sort and prep for the trip, and it’s absolutely destroyed. Moths. I have no idea how the fuck this happened- it’s in a proper box with cedar and mothballs. No other clothing was affected. My yarn stash is intact and shows 0 signs of trouble. (Thank fucking Christ.) The only piece not damaged was his rabbit fur hat- it was in a different box.

I was already buying toddler winter gear, but now I’ve got to set up a whole new wardrobe for us. The wool coats were bad enough to bring me to tears. Vintage wool pea coats. Ugh.

So... yeah. This just got crazy more expensive.

What vacation put you beyond your intended budget? What happened?

Have fun. Driving or flying? Hit up goodwill if you need temporary stuff

we had a family reunion a few years ago in Newport Beach and I made the return flight for the same day as the day I got there.

at that time though Louis could sit on my lap so I was only out $500 but that was still kick to the gut

Flying, and yeah- it’s probably the best way. Thank goodness I can get base layers before hand. Yay holiday shipping.

I will keep you warm, pea.

my trip to egypt was more expensive than anticipated, largely due to tipping. Everyone wants a tip, for everything, all of the time, and we weren't expecting that at all. 12 days of constant tipping added up more than we expected it would. Also we had some travel issues and had to hire a private driver from Hurghada to Luxor. Fortunately the exchange rate is fantastic for USD so it still wasn't that bad. Just more than expected.

uh we never figured it out to be honest
a driver (which we had to take--we weren't allowed to rent cars in egypt though we certainly tried, and public transport was a mess) was between 5 and ten EGP
our tour guides were a few hundred depending on how much time we spent with them
every staff member of the cruise we took
service was around 20 egp per meal i guess
like i said the exchange rate is fantastic for the usd so by most standards it is still super cheap
but i was travelling at that time on month 3 of no income with two more ahead of me at the time

italy was probably more expensive than expected but i did not budget that at all so i didn't care how much i spent

Interesting on the tipping, good pro tip.

We went to France a couple of years ago and my buddy/acquaintance has an apartment he's kept there for years. He was a musician so mostly rented it to other artists that wanted to do an extended stay sort of thing and it kept the mortgage going. Anyways he backed out of our stay about 3 months before we left. After a little freakout we found some place to stay that was $400. So you know, a little more than we wanted to spend but oh well.
