Mythology is wonderful and important, touting mythology as fact or science is terrifying and one of the single most detrimental cultures our species has enacted.

Religion may have done wonderful things for individuals in the sense of giving them hope or easing their fear of death but as a global institution it has done waaaay more harm then good on the strength of separatism alone.

The catholic church is straight up big business with as much blood on its hands as any country or government, nice trillion dollar art collection though.

Hard pass.

We call them Chreasters.
I don’t practice anymore either but I send my children to catholic school.
I agree 100% on the laughing at religion. Especially while most of us here seek comfort/love/a sense of belonging from other humans. Religion is kinda a larger body of that, to me. A sense of belonging.

Also, I think Phook should give up asking others to change or telling them to go away. WE NEED PEOPLE HERE AND WE NEED DIFFERENT PERSONALITIES, PEOPLE.

In the last year I have given up everything I would normally do for Lent. Smoking, drinking, garbage food, hard drugs, etc. This year I am playing my saxophone everyday for 6 weeks. I usually play guitar or piano for an hour a day and I'm noticing I'm in a musical rut. Plus, it's been collecting dust since high school. Win/win

Hard pass.

If you want to define religion as dogmatism, then we're on the same page. I think that mistaking the social origin of religion for divine origin and divine "truth" is harmful and irresponsible, if not a bit idiotic. That mistake is often the root of what leads to violence, exclusionism, bloodshed, etc.
I'm not speaking of religion as an organized system of worshiping individualized / personified gods*; I am speaking of the heart of religion, which is ritual. I'm an agnostic who loves Catholicism. Why? Because I understand the need for ritual, for collective emotion, for social instinct. That part of religion can't be dismissed, and when you "religion, lol" and "myth, lol, tooth fairy" you're also dismissing one of the fundamental elements of being human.

Read Cassirer, Langer, or Jane Ellen Harrison (Themis, for her)

*By that I mean the god/gods worshiped already have personality, are are considered to be separated from humanity. Ex: Christian God, Jewish God, Greek Pantheon

Also if religion serves a purpose for an individual, that’s great. It may be that persons relationship with the divine, and people are allowed to have that. Religious texts have good teachings about morality and societal functions. They have some outdated ones too. When they become literal and people try to bend the will of others to their worldview in the name of said religious teachings—then we have a problem.
The big turnoff is the crossing of the line between an upstanding community institution to being a method of control. And every major religion has both parts. Minor ones do too.

Yes! Love Campbell
I really love Harrison's book Themis; just read the first chapter, even, though the rest is good too (esp from Daimon to Olympian--about the individualization/personification of the gods, and Themis--the last ch).
Cassirer can be p rough to get through at times--His Essay on Man talks specifically about his phil of symbolic forms, and he wrote a four volume series called The Philosophy of Symbolic Forms; I think Vol 4 is on myth though I am not certain
Langer also does phil of symbolic forms of culture; she was heavily influenced by Cassirer and wrote on religion, music, and art as cultural forms of expression (I think that is in her Philosophy in a New Key)

Campbell also wrote the introduction to Johann Jakob Bachofen's Myth, Religion, and Mother right which gets a little out there if you want to get even whackier

I am going to make an assertion that social media has supplanted the needs that religion meets.

At least there is less penalty for disagreeing.

I wouldn’t tax them anymore than they should rightfully pay for the property they occupy.
Most of them do a lot for their surrounding communities, they definitely give back. IMO.

Alcohol. Haven't done a booze free Lent in a while and I'm trying to be optimistic about it (while I drink some beers tonight).

My idol.

My dad gave up alcohol every year until I graduated High school. It was always so amazing to me. I could NEVER even attempt to do the same.
Good luck! That’s awesome. And if there’s a child at home watching, they’ll remember it as awesome.

Used to hate Lent back in my catholic days. Always felt like a crock of shit. I would only give up meat on fridays because my parents made me. That lasted until I was about 16 or so.

Ok. So I decided, since, I ate meat today, I forgot to get ashes, and now I’m at the bar so it’s too late....that for lent, I will confine all my posts to one thread....fee’s lent thread.
Any response or mindless babble or pics or anything, until Easter, will take place in one thread.
Try and keep up.
