Pliny the Younger should be flowing in Santa Rosa this weekend.

Weather has been stellar, you picked a good time to visit.

If you're looking for something off the beaten path, check out Occidental and Bodega Bay. May be a ways if you're in wine country.

Sorry I don't have better recs, I'm sort of a NorCal noob and not a wine drinker.

Was kind of hoping not to have to rent a car if possible

Was thinking of biking and taking shuttles to wineries

This is overwhelming

There are about 12-14 really busy weekends in Napa a year. This is one of them. I’ve heard that they are suffering from the fires though so maybe you will actually be able to get some dinner reservations at this late a date. Otherwise, try walking in early. Don’t go to any big wineries, they will be a zoo. It’s almost worth booking at a hotel with a concierge so they can make arrangements, if wine tasting is important to you. But ask them for off the beaten path recs. Otherwise, the weather is going to be nice. But try to stay off 29 in the mornings and afternoon, Silverado Trail isn’t as direct but is scenic & has less traffic. Sonoma used to be the less crowded alternative but I’m not sure anymore.

How are you going to get from the airport to wine country? A shuttle? If you don’t want to rent a car maybe try to stay around the square in Sonoma, or downtown Napa.

There’s a bus right from the airport

I am willing to rent a car if I have to, just trying to keep costs down if I can

Is there any reason I shouldn’t just stay in Sonoma town?

Thing Phish you’re my only hope. I know nothing

Yeah, stay in Sonoma. You can rent bikes there with a winery map and that will be a much mellower experience.
Eat at LaSalette, a Portuguese restaurant on the square that you should be able to get into. Fremont Diner is a favorite of area chefs but it’s 10 min from downtown and will likely be packed. You could maybe take an Uber there during off hours. Or not, it’ll be time consuming and you won’t have much.

I know there's a bust from SFO to Petaluma and Santa Rosa but it doesnt go to Sonoma (if that's where you want to stay). It's a fairly rural area, I think having a car is nice but not totally essential I guess. It's just nice to get out of town and into the mountains/vineyards a bit.

Fremont Diner is great, Gotts/Oxbow, too.

I always tell people to go to Cafe Citti--amazing italian hole in the wall just north of sonoma in kenwood. For some dank mexican...El Molino. So good...maybe the best restaurant in sonoma.

The Fig Cafe (sister to the girl and the fig in Glen Ellen) is great too.

Kunde is a usual winery stop when I'm down there visiting my parents--its a quality larger winery. Chateau St. Jean is just about next to it and is a super impressive property. I went to Scribe once and really liked it...people our age that started a little something on a cool piece of land. I think you have to call ahead before heading over there, but I liked their vibe.

I like going to the coast when I'm up there. Bodega is great. If you head that way, try to hit Wild Flour Bread in Freestone. drool.

lol it's funny how people who live within 100 miles of Napa/Sonoma view it so differently that the rest of the world

we're like "let's hit In-N-Out on the way in, get blotto at 3 wineries, and hit an In-N-Out on the way home"

everybody else visits all proper like

Yeah it's a neat spot. I dont really drink anymore so the lustre of sonoma isn't really there for me these days. Whenever I'm down, I try to get to the coast. Lots of cool spots close by.

Solbar (Solage) is a solid rec as one of the few restaurants of that caliber that you will still be able to get into. I guess they changed chefs last year though.

We did Napa and stayed at Carneros. Fucking amazing place to stay.

Day 1: Hiked the sonoma coast park (Kortum Trail) > Santa Rosa for Pliny's and lunch at Russian River. Dinner at El Dorado in Sonoma (best place we went)
Day 2: Hot Air Balloon ride > Wineries (Chateau Montelena, Gundlach, Sterling) > Lunch/snack at Otto! in Yountville > Dinner at Bouchon (Thomas Keller)
Day 3: Bike Ride around Carneros > Massage > Wineries (Imagery, Domaine Carneros) > Dinner at Press in St. Helena

Native Sonoman here and I second all the things Knightline said. If I recall correctly his parents live there too.

Also, on the square the best restaurant is Girl in the Fig. My sources tell me Hopmonk is tapping a keg of the Younger this afternoon. but it'll be gone in a few hours. Plenty of tasting rooms right on the square to walk to. But, if you can get your hands on bike, I highly recommend hitting the loop of wineries just out the eastside of town. You can ride thru the grapevines and hit up the ravenswood > bartholamew > buena vista trifecta (skip Sebastiani, it's the most tourist trappy of the lot). And if you really feel like peddling there's probably half a dozen more smaller ones if you keep heading east past buena vista.

Ridge is the bomb....I'm fan of Healdsburg in general. Can be a lil pretentious for sure...but weekdays are awesome around town.

Would be my choice for the typical wine country tourist visit destination
