there's a place in town that opened recently called the gorehound's playground, it specializes in scary movies

Not really as much as I did when I was a kid. Now Im more of a spooky/creepy movie fan than outright horror.

it wasn’t bad. pish watched about a third of it because she was covering her eyes.

it was cheeky at moments, but overall pretty good and worth watching.

have you seen open house on netflix? the ritual was significantly better than that abomination.

Not a fan of schlock, needs to have a story and not just horror for the sake of horror

I like them until they get rapey and then it gets shut off. Murder, demons, gore, suspense—all great.

I have not seen Open House and it sounds like I shouldn't

The biggest part for me with scary movies is the setting - I watched the Ritual while working out in a well lit basement, not exactly a "get scared" setting. Years ago I watched a movie called Session 9 by myself at 1am in the dark and it scared the shit out of me. I told my wife to watch it and she watched it at 8pm with the lights on and wasn't scared at all. So I really do try to watch the scary stuff in the right setting, it makes a huge difference for me.

I like thoughtful horror more than, say, Hostel or something that's purely sadistic.

Speaking of Netflix stuff: I didn't think Open House was as terrible as some. I suspect the, ah, nihilistic ending was meant to be the most horrific part of the film. Eh.

Didn't care for 1922 at all...although I liked the connection to The Stand.

I really liked The Ritual and Creep. And I recently watched V/H/S and thought it was pretty good. Haven't seen the second installment yet.

Not the same, only in that you can have very tense movies without being scared (tense drama, tense romance, tense action).

Yes this

there's a place for both kinds. movies without schlock have better re-watch value, but i genuinely like both. there's a certain pulpy style that is enjoyable, even when it lacks substance. even moreso when it's done in homage or with a very careful eye to look schlocky, but done so well (house of the devil, 2009 is a great example of horror homage that i've seen recently). it's like comedy movies - some can be brilliantly funny, or some are just fucking stupid but plenty enjoyable regardless.
