The problem is the Wings don't suck enough. This middle of the road shit is more frustrating than being terrible. They need to be awful for a few years and stock up on prospects.

Wings need to punch their ticket for the Rasmus Dahlin sweepstakes

amazingly there are 7 teams worse than them RN

There's some truly awful teams in the NHL at the moment.

Buffalo and Arizona are a special kind of bad. Nobody is outdoing them this year. Still, the Wings could have a decent chance at Dahlin if the do some serious losing. They just need to embrace the tank. A chance at a player like Dahlin is well worth the embarrassment.

Gotta imagine Holland is gone after this season

and will be replaced w/ a GM who's willing to blow it up.

The way the NHL is these days, you really need to just bite the bullet, acquire a shitload of picks, be bad for a few seasons, and stockpile prospects.

Devils, Flyers, and Dallas all moved from outside the bottom five into the top three spots last season.

The last place team only has like an 18% chance at first overall or something.

Also, it isn't just Dahlin. Svechnikov may challenge for 1 OA. There's the other Tkachuk kid too, etc.

It's funny watching the games and listening to John /ozzy / Trev / Ken / mickey talk about what is not going their way. It's rebuilding time.

As for the bye week, I assumed that it was to offset not having an Olympic break.

I mean I don't think you need to try to lose a la Edmonton and Buffalo in the McDavid/Eichel draft

but you did need to know when to call it quits on trying to win by signing veteran players to contracts, trading away picks for roster players, etc.

I know how it goes. I watched Lou try to keep the hope alive for three seasons after the 2012 cup run. Dark times...those were some truly awful Devils teams.

Yeah, that younger Tkachuk was good at the a world juniors. He looked awesome. I haven't seen much of Svechnikov (the Wings already have his brother) but I have heard he's great. I'd take any of them.

The Wings have Rasmussen in their system too. He's looking like a legit NHLer.

Kind of hard to buy into a rebuild when you have players like Lidstrom, Datsyuk, and Zetterberg. As those guys depart it makes more and more sense. It's the only way to go.

Avs are killing it right now. Finally some good hockey from this team. Love how Duchene is playing on a Shit team again! Serves him right for being a self centered prick who cares more about stats than winning.

MacKinnon is playing out of his mind too. Even if they don’t make the playoffs this year they have a great foundation and chemistry moving forward

I'm on the McKinnon for Hart bandwagon. Or at least I would be if I wasn't on the Taylor Hall for Hart bandwagon.

The Sens, lol. What a joke of a franchise. Somebody please rescue Erik Karlsson from them and put him on a fun team (like the Devils)

Amazing how fast the Sens fell apart from last season. If MacKinnon keeps playing like he has he really will be a serious heart contender. Kerfoot has been a pleasant surprise as well

Yeah I'd be feeling a little burnt about Kerfoot if we didn't land Butcher. He has played well. Definitely can't blame him for going elsewhere, Devils are pretty stacked with young forwards right now. I am glad he's looking legit, I watched him a fair bit when he was at Harvard and have always liked his game.

The Sens had a pretty lucky run and probably were never that good. Still, the Turris trade was brutal.

Tampa is sick

Preds are sick also

Taylor Hall is also sick. 10 pts 31 shots in his last five games. Thank you hockey gods for Peter Chiarelli, GM on the Edmonton Oilers.

Damn, Kevin Shattenkirk is out indefinitely with a torn meniscus.

I hate to see a player go down with injury. That being said I think Shattenkirk is overrated. At least based on my observations of him playing in "the east"

Sounds like he's been playing injured all season...

I really like Shattenkirk's game. Borderline top 10 defenseman in the NHL IMO, but I am heavily biased towards guys who can skate.

I've only seen him play one game this year, so I am basing a lot of what I saw last year with the Caps and in the playoffs. He looked completely out of sink with the Caps. He certainly was anything but a catalyst for them on the back end. Which for me, was great!

Yeah he did not fit well with Washington

Great player regardless though. I really wanted the Devils to sign him last summer, though considering the Vatanen trade probably doesn't happen if they do I am not too disappointed about it. I mean Shattenkirk is definitely a better player, but having Sami at his cap hit will make the inevitable Hischier/Bratt/Butcher extensions + new Hall contract easier to manage without totally fucking our depth.

Crawford will not come back, that is my bet. Funny having the hawks miss the playoffs this year after doing well, but your window in this era is short. Then pens window is shutting, the jackets and leafs can make up for it.

Number 88 went up to the rafters last night. I have such bittersweet feelings about that. Watching some YouTube comp last night it was insane how skillful and fucking mean Lindros was. There has never been a combination of strength and power and playmaker like that. Scott Stevens put a end to that.

Wow they came down pretty hard on Marchand for elbowing Marcus Johansson in the face last night. 5 games.

For my part I would've preferred they A. called the penalty and put the Devils on a 5 on 3, and B. not called that double minor on Miles Wood, which is one of the worst penalty calls I've seen in quite some time.

Metro is crazy tight still. 2nd-5th are separated by 1 point, Rangers and Islanders are only two points back.

Devils really missed their chance to create some separation. Not a good ten game stretch for them, even though I think they'd still played reasonably well. Some bad goaltending and brutal puck luck is fuckin em right now.

Interesting piece from Larry Brooks on the Rangers:
https://nypost.com/2018/01/26/mcdonagh- ... low-it-up/

Quote:
There is no ambivalence within management. The Blueshirts, we’re told on good authority, view the Feb. 26 trade deadline as a unique opportunity to refresh the roster and replenish the organization, regardless of where the club stands in relation to a playoff spot.

The mandate, approved (if not established) in the owner’s suite by Jim Dolan, is to build a Stanley Cup winner rather than to simply extend a seven-year playoff streak that is in jeopardy.

It's the smart thing to do IMO, but if they won't trade Lundqvist they'll hamstring the effort to reload.

Sad that the only mention of the bruins in this thread is about the psychomand suspension. How are you puck gurus not mentioning the hottest team in the NHL in the last month + ???

Gotta get more Bruins fans in here then?

I am aware they've been playing well but I rarely watch them when they aren't playing the Devils so I don't really have much to say about them

FWIW after watching the video again I don't think that Marchand elbow was intentional. Kinda looks he was losing an edge and just flailed his arm out.

It was soft, but his history crushes him. Still an elbow to the head. He could have pivoted out of it I think.

Don't like that Radko Gudas hit at all after seeing some replays. He had Palmieri lined up IMO...will be interesting to see if the league brings down the hammer or lets it slide.

He got fucking wrecked by Travis Zajac (lol) after getting out of the penalty box. Didn't know Trav had it in him.

How do the Ducks win against the 2nd best team in the Atlantic, but lose to the 2nd worst in the same week.

The current conference leaders would suggest a Tampa/Vegas SCF. Wow! That would be a hot June

Yeah I just cannot bring myself to buy into either of those teams. Both have too great of a history of letdowns. Hellebuyck is looking much improved though, and goaltending has been the Jets' downfall in the last few seasons. They are stacked up front and the D is solid.

Id take either of the two over LA in my top 3

But I’ll hand it to this young goaltender Kuemper, Kings could be doing a lot worse in their 15 games since Quick was injured

Yeah you're right that LA has been pretty bad lately. I kind of forgot that they've fallen off

I might swap in the Jets instead after thinking about it more. St. Louis also looking strong this season
